A statement from the Comité Champagne said: "From 297.3 million bottles in 2019, sales had fallen by 18% the following year in the midst of the crisis related to Covid-19, then recovered by 33% within two years, reaching more than 325 million bottles by the end of 2022.
In 2023, France saw an 8.2% decrease with 127 million bottles. The national market is suffering more than export markets from inflation, which weighed on household budgets throughout the year.
Exports, at 172 million bottles (-8.2% compared to 2022), significantly exceeded their 2019 level (156 million bottles) and now account for more than 57% of total sales, compared to 45% ten years ago. The overstocking by distributors in 2022 due to fear of shortages partly explains this decline.
Despite the drop in volume, the appellation managed to maintain its sales above 6 billion euros thanks to the increase in the quality level of Champagnes, especially in exports."
