Champagne Dehours&Fils
Jerome Dehours owns 14 hectares of vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne, the Marne Valley, where the vineyards rise on both sides of the River Marne and which is famous for its Pinot Meunier champagnes. He produces approx. 80,000 bottles per year. Jerome Dehours' grandfather, Ludovic, was one of the first winegrowers in the 1930s to use his grapes to produce his own champagne. In the 1970s, his father Robert, along with other winegrowers, was a pioneer of the idea of using reserve wines, i.e. holding back wines from the best years to compensate for wines from poorer years.
If you visit Jerome Dehours, you should allow at least 2 hours. He passionately tells his story and shows you what is important in the production of champagne: "la vigne", the grapevine. At Domaine Dehours, no chemical fertilizers are used; instead, the grass growing between the vines is simply mown. All plants form an ecosystem and the grapevine can thus better defend itself against diseases. The grass growth weakens the grapevine a little, which means it produces fewer grapes. This respect for nature is continued in champagne production to create unique terroir champagnes.
