The grape harvest in Champagne began on September 2nd. Despite challenging weather during the ripening period, the region expects a high-quality harvest.
While the earliest sectors have just started harvesting, the majority of vineyards will begin harvesting in the coming days. The harvest across the appellation's approximately 34,000 hectares is carried out entirely by hand. It will employ between 100,000 and 120,000 people and last two to three weeks.
From the beginning of the year until the end of July, the viticultural season was particularly calm, with little frost and hail, and powdery and downy mildew were also kept in check;
The weather in August was more chaotic, hot and unusually humid, which favored the appearance of Botrytis foci. Fortunately, this weather also contributed to the exceptional weight of the grapes, which, at an average of over 220 grams, was higher than ever before in Champagne. These numerous and generous grapes will make it possible to select only those in perfect health.
