The Champagne wine region makes up 0.5% of the world's vineyard area and 4% of France's vineyard area.
1-The Players
16,200 winegrowers, 370 Champagne houses, and 130 cooperatives cultivate 34,200 hectares. They employ approximately 15,000 permanent staff and 120,000 seasonal workers during the harvest.
In terms of area, Champagne represents only 0.5% of the world's vineyards, but 9% of the volume and 33% of the value of sparkling wine consumption.
2- The Trends
In 2021, new trends in Champagne consumption emerged. In many countries, Champagne consumption at home started during the lockdown and continues; there is a modernization of distribution channels with an exponential increase in online purchases, and finally, new, less formal forms of celebrations are developing where Champagne seems to find its place. It will still take a few years to determine if these phenomena are long-lasting.
3- A Few Figures
In 2021, 320 million bottles were sold for a value of 5.7 billion euros, of which 140.7 million bottles were in France. Abroad (all countries excluding France), 179 million bottles were sold for a value of 3.6 billion euros. The export of bottles has been greater than sales in France for the past five years.
4- The six largest export markets in 2021 are:
- the USA: 34.1 million bottles (share of winegrowers: 5.5%)
- Great Britain: 29.9 million (share of winegrowers: 1.8%)
- Japan: 13.8 million (share of winegrowers: 5.6%)
- Germany: 11.2 million (share of winegrowers: 4.1%)
- Belgium: 10.3 million (share of winegrowers: 6.7%)
- Italy: 9.225 million (share of winegrowers: 15.7%)
5-Germany, a still undiversified market.
The Maisons de Champagne hold 91.0% of the market volume, which is 8.5 percentage points more than the average in EU countries in 2021, while winegrowers account for only 4.1% (11.1% on average in EU countries).
But the consumption of grower Champagne has increased by more than 1% since 2012. We continue to work on it!
Help us doing it ;-)
